Chapter Eleven
It was a question that Susanna had asked herself on numerous occasions. Though she enjoyed reading all kinds of books and watching movies from various genres, when it came to her own writing, there was alwaysâaside from the one play sheâd only ever shared with Callieâa happy ending.
She shrugged, as if she didnât know how to respond to his query. âMaybe I watched too many Disney movies as a kid.â
âThatâs not an answer, itâs a deflection,â he chided.
âPerhaps,â she acknowledged. âBut I didnât think you wanted to hear about my dysfunctional childhood.â
âActually, I do,â he said. âBecause Iâm only now realizing that, as good as you are at getting other people to talk about themselves, youâre equally reluctant to talk about yourself.â
âBecause my life isnât really that interesting.â
âLet me be the judge of that.â
âOkay,â she agreed, albeit with reluctance. âI guess Iâd say that I write happy endings because I want to believe they can exist.â
âWhy do you doubt it?â he asked.
âBecause my parentsâ marriage fizzled like a can of soda left out overnightâand almost as quickly.â
He winced at that. âI forget sometimes how lucky I am to have grown up with two parents who are not only still together but still love one another, even after forty-five years of marriage.â
âNot only do you have two terrific parents, but youâve also got four pretty great brothers.â
âThe brothers you can have,â he said, making her laugh.
But her expression quickly turned serious again. âFor as long as I can remember, itâs just been me and my mom. And weâve done okay,â she hastened to add. âBut sometimes, when Iâm around your family, I canât help but wonder how different things might have been if my dad had stayedâor if Iâd had a brother or sister.â
âHow old were you when he left?â
âFive.â She guided him through the wings to the stage. âAnd thisââ she spread her arms wide ââis our set.â
She turned to Dean then, and found his gaze on her, his expression thoughtful.
âWeâre going to get back to this subject later,â he told her.
Susanna threw her arms out again. âOur set.â Her tone was firm.
This time, he took the cue and glanced around. âIt looks like a living room.â
âItâs Hollyâs living room,â she told him. âWhat we call a box set.â She crossed the set to open a door, then walked through it to another door and opened that one, too. âAnd this is Noelâs office.â
âAll of the action happens in those two rooms?â
âMost of it. We do the outdoor scenes in front of a painted front cloth. Not only does it keep the cost down, but it allows set changes to happen at the same time behind it.â
âI see the Christmas tree that you mentioned decorating,â he said. âDoes that mean you have to undecorate it after every performance in preparation for the next one?â
âThankfully no,â she said. âBecause decoratingâand undecoratingâa tree is actually very time-consuming.â
âBelieve me, I know,â he assured her. âMy mom demands all hands on deck when her tree is ready to be decorated, and it still takes several hours.
